Hello friends! My name is Mackenzie (aka Kenzie, Kenz, Mack, Macdog…whatever variation you can dream up, really). I originally grew up in Wisconsin (Go Pack Go!), and I moved out to Arizona in 2016 to work as an AmeriCorps volunteer with a conservation corps. I’d spent my whole life exploring nature in the Northwoods, but I’d never truly hiked before my first corps hitch — eight days of grueling work for 10 hours a day in the “dry heat.” While I quickly found the best friends of my life and gained some badass trail maintenance and chainsaw skills, I struggled to find a peace and patience within myself as a hiker. I shed so many tears over being the last in the group — never great for hydration purposes — until, little by little, I learned to self-advocate and trust my body’s own pace. *Sigh* Finally. Less tears! More freedom! A reminder of why I loved being outside in the first place.
As a fat, queer femme in conservation, I don’t always feel like I belong in the outdoor sphere. Enter FGH. I’m so thrilled to be joining you all in these outdoor adventures as we explore and learn about the history of the land. I hope to be a part of building a community that is open, patient, affirming, and FUN. Our bodies can do incredible things, and we all deserve the space and time to discover what those things are to each of us. See you at the trailhead!
