I’m Coco, the ambassador for the London, UK chapter of Fat Girls Hiking.
I am over the moon to be part of the growth of this truly beautiful group of people and can’t wait for the new adventures that await our community in the United Kingdom!
Being born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia I have a very strong tie to the outdoors. Vancouver is beautiful city surrounded by almost 60 million hectares of forests, snow capped mountains, the ocean and beautiful farmland which needless to say, created a lot of opportunities for adventures and trouble-making!
My love of nature runs through my family, my earliest and most coherent memories consist of me sitting in the dirt chatting to my dad as he puttered around his garden, nurturing his plants, shrubs and vegetables until the sun went down. Being in that environment instilled in me some of my favourites traits that I have now as an adult. Curiosity, patience and generosity. From then until now, there hasn’t been one hike or walk I’ve gone on where I haven’t learnt something new about myself or the environment surrounding me.
However, being raised in such an active city I really felt the implications of that “culture” as a teenager and young adult. The self doubt, lack of confidence, lack of community (clothing, gear, resources) and fear of being left behind really affected my sense of adventure- I over thought every opportunity that came my way.
In the last few years through personal loss and growth, I’ve realised how short life is and how every opportunity is precious. I want to continue my journey and grow as a human, eat what I please, hike when I want, and say yes to everything that comes my way.
Besides being outside, I live for trying new things- be it food, experiences or classes! I’m also very close with my in-laws so go on mini-adventures with my mother-in-law frequently, you can usually find us exploring historical properties or having a cup of tea/slice of cake in the surrounding counties on the weekend.
My mode of self-love is breathing in fresh air and connecting to my environment. It truly makes me happy and humble and I’m so so excited to share and spread our community in London- celebrating diversity and creating a safe, accepting space for EVERYONE in the outdoors!
