I’m originally from the Ottawa Valley in Ontario, Canada. I’ve been living in West Virginia for two years now, and it’s starting to feel like home! 🙂 Outside of work, I foster kittens with a local rescue and I am involved in feminist and LGBTQ+ community organizing.
During grad school, I started hiking and running to help curb anxiety. I’m really privileged to live in a state with so many outdoor parks and local trails—but, I found that hiking and running alone could be intimidating! The outdoors is a space that is not always welcoming to women, LGBTQ+ folx, and other marginalized groups. I was really inspired by a group of my students last year who held their own hike for the LGBTQ+ community in Morgantown as a way to reclaim space, as well as the work of FGH!
I’m so grateful to Summer for allowing us to start a FGH hiking chapter in Morgantown. I feel that FGH will allow people like myself to explore new trails and build community together! I’m looking forward to meeting you all!
I grew up in a very outdoorsy life that was full of hiking, camping and white water rafting. I am a now student studying psychology and women’s and gender studies at West Virginia University, a college that is surrounded by many natural resources. I hope to take back space not only in nature but also in my university. I plan to use this chapter to create a space in the college setting to allow for fat people and LGBTQ+ people to feel safer and have a sense of community.
