I am Alison, ambassador for the Vancouver, BC chapter of Fat Girls Hiking. I am so thrilled to have this opportunity. I’ve already met so many wonderful people through Fat Girls Hiking and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring.
I grew up in greater Vancouver, but really I feel like I was raised on trails. My Dad is an avid hiker and he dragged me up many mountains when I was a kid. To be honest, I was never sold on the concept. Hiking felt like hard work and I was the slowest in my family, often having to be coerced into taking any number of steps forward on the path. I remember my Dad frequently saying, “I don’t care how big your steps are but you have to keep taking steps.”
As an adult, I have a totally different outlook towards hiking. It’s not a chore anymore. And, I’m not competing with my family members, or trying to act like I’m more comfortable than I actually am. I marvel at the way being on the trail helps me to be present in my body and hear the messages it’s giving me.
When I’m not wandering forests, I am working with caregivers of young children (ages 0-6) as well as with the children themselves, providing resources and community support. I am also a parent.
Beyond hiking, working, and parenting, I somehow manage to find time for a hobby or two. I study languages. I speak English, French, and Mandarin. I’m also an amateur woodworker. I recently finished my second piece of furniture. Sometimes I do deep water running.
Mostly, I’m just a person. I live my life collecting experiences and connecting with people. I love how hiking with people encourages that connection. And, I am thankful to live in a place that is so full of forests to wander in.
