I am Alison, ambassador for the Vancouver, BC chapter of Fat Girls Hiking. I am so thrilled to have this opportunity. I’ve already met so many wonderful people through Fat Girls Hiking and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring.
I grew up in greater Vancouver, but really I feel like I was raised on trails. My Dad is an avid hiker and he dragged me up many mountains when I was a kid. To be honest, I was never sold on the concept. Hiking felt like hard work and I was the slowest in my family, often having to be coerced into taking any number of steps forward on the path. I remember my Dad frequently saying, “I don’t care how big your steps are but you have to keep taking steps.”
As an adult, I have a totally different outlook towards hiking. It’s not a chore anymore. And, I’m not competing with my family members, or trying to act like I’m more comfortable than I actually am. I marvel at the way being on the trail helps me to be present in my body and hear the messages it’s giving me.
When I’m not wandering forests, I am working with caregivers of young children (ages 0-6) as well as with the children themselves, providing resources and community support. I am also a parent.
Beyond hiking, working, and parenting, I somehow manage to find time for a hobby or two.  I study languages. I speak English, French, and Mandarin.  I’m also an amateur woodworker. I recently finished my second piece of furniture. Sometimes I do deep water running.
Mostly, I’m just a person. I live my life collecting experiences and connecting with people. I love how hiking with people encourages that connection. And, I am thankful to live in a place that is so full of forests to wander in.

Bonjour! I am a beautifully fat cis pansexual woman from Montreal (Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Peoples are custodians) and French is my first language. I have been living in Vancouver, BC (traditional/unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations) for the past 5 years. I am of European descent but consider myself an ally of ALL PEOPLES. I love being in the outdoors in forests, along beaches and on water bodies. It really grounds me! I look forward to being a Fat Girls Hiking Ambassador and hosting inclusive and safe hikes for ALL without any shame or stigma!
I first learned about the concept of  “Health at Every Size” (HAES) about 10 year ago. It was so liberating to start reading blog posts and books that spoke about fat acceptance and activism. I now strive to advocate for the three components of HAES every day: respect all diversity, challenge cultural and scientific assumptions and value body awareness instead, and compassionate self-care. This last component is a work in progress as I continue to find ways to experience joy when I move my body and learn to eat mindfully and intuitively. Being part of a supportive community both in person and online has been tremendously helpful. I am a conscious dance teacher (non-choreographed and more of a free flow sober “journey”) and am hoping to start teaching to ALL BODIES in the next few months.
